Staffing Insurance: Grammar Slips in the Workplace
You want to grab drinks after work with your friend. The first decision you make isn’t where to go or what flavor margarita you’re craving. Rather, the first decision you make is how you are going to invite them in the first place. Text? Google Chat? Email? Facebook? Twitter? Google+? You see the point.
Traditional grammar rules haven’t followed the multitude of communication mediums now available. Proper punctuation and sentence structure just doesn’t work when you are trying to communicate a thought in 140 characters. Everyday communication has become lax, slang-filled, and much more casual as a result.
This casual trend in communication is easy and convenient, but it has its consequences, especially in the workplace. Looseness with language can create bad impressions with clients and cause communication errors.
According to the Wall Street Journal, 45% of 430 employers who responded in a survey said they were increasing employee-training programs to improve employees’ grammar and other skills. Others are consulting business grammar guides for help. One particularly driven boss imposed a 25 cent fine for serious grammar offenses.
Many managers attribute the lax grammatical style to the informality of emails, texting, and tweeting where not complying with traditional rules is the norm. Others say it is the obscurity of grammar rules themselves- many are unclear and leave room for debate.
