Imbalance of Supply and Demand in the Recruiting Industry
The increase in demand for recruiters started as a trend earlier this year and it is not slowing down. According to Wanted Analytics, this demand has risen 29 percent from September 2010. This growth is evident in metropolitan areas such as New York City, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
As the demand for recruiters increases, employers’ expectation of them increases. What once was an easily attainable job is now becoming difficult for many. Aside from traditional recruiting skills, potential recruiters must also have extensive knowledge and experience with applicant tracking software, mobile recruiting, negotiation, and social media skills. In recent job descriptions, positions with social media requirements rose 52 percent from last year, and job descriptions that require strong negotiation skills rose 13 percent. Because of the unwarranted additional requirements, less potential applicants are becoming considered. The lack of supply creates a competitive dynamic between businesses.
Within these additional requirements are more skills candidates need to have and more certificates they need to obtain. These skills include knowledge of basic programs such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and social networking sites. However, these required skills go beyond the basics. Recruiters need to be knowledgeable of Oracle Java, Online Databases, IBM Lotus Notes because of the industries they will be recruiting for. The industries with the most job ads for recruiters are Engineering, Computer Design and Programming, Real Estate Agents and Brokers, and certified Public Accountants. Recruiting agencies require recruiters to have a CPA certificate and be knowledgeable of technical applications because it is best for them to comprehend the job opening they will be tracking for.
