How to Land a Job After College
In contrast to a decade or two ago, the importance and the purpose of a Bachelor’s degree is dwindling away. The disconnect between employment and a Bachelor’s degree has made many individuals skeptical of America’s higher education system. Many post graduates are either unemployed or underemployed and it doesn’t seem like it will get any better for Spring 2013 college graduates. The job market is weak and now more than ever do these up and coming graduates need to step up their game. The last thing a student wants to be part of is the 53% of graduates who are unemployed or underemployed. Come this Spring graduates will have to step into the real world, so here are a few tips on how to land a job after college.
Resume: When constructing a resume, highlight your skills and attributes that tailor to the specific job you are applying to. Do not over-complicate your resume with unnecessary verbiage and content; most employers simply do not have the time to a long, drawn out resume. Keep it at one page and keep it simple, clean, and concise. Ensure that there aren’t any grammatical errors, as it indicates a candidate’s inability to pay attention to detail.
Interviews: First off, go to every single job interview as if you are able to land the position, regardless of the company’s size. If it’s not the right position or company for you, you will still be able to improve your interview skills. If you are able to land an interview, prepare as much as possible; research the company and your interviewer. The interview is very important, so ensure that you stand out from the other qualified applicants. When arriving to the interview be punctual and dress properly if you want to land a job after college. During the interview, keep eye contact, ask them questions, and most importantly express your passion for the industry.
Networking: Many graduates do not believe they know a lot of “important” people. They often overlook important individuals such as professors, past employers and co-workers. These individuals are vital for potential connections, recommendations, and advice.
Social Media and the Internet: Take advantage of technology. There are many sites that advertise job openings and there are many recruiters looking for qualified applicants, so make sure you post your resume and highlight your skills. Make sure you are advertising yourself in a good light and review your social media profiles.
